Feeling The Burn? Helpful Tips For Hemorrhoid Sufferers

Feeling the burn may be a prized measure of athletic prowess at the gym or on the court or track, but for hemorrhoid sufferers, there is nothing good about the burning sensation associated with hemorrhoids. In fact, this condition can cause mild to severe levels of discomfort, including burning, itching, pain, and bleeding. Even worse, some hemorrhoids can become large and extend well into the anal canal or through the rectum, resulting in even more pain and discomfort. If you are battling the discomfort of hemorrhoids, there are some things you can do to lessen the discomfort and help you resume more of your normal activities.

Become better about weight management

Carrying around excess weight is one of the worst things hemorrhoid sufferers can do. Extra pounds put more pressure on the already swollen veins that make up hemorrhoids. Taking the proactive course of reducing body weight helps to lessen the pressure and relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

Move around more often at work

Those who spend hours in a seated position for work are often at higher risk of developing hemorrhoids or worsening existing ones than those who are more active. Office and clerical workers, truck and bus drivers, and factory workers who are seated throughout their work day are especially at risk.

Finding a way to get up, stretch, and walk around for a few minutes several times a day can be very helpful in reducing the discomfort of existing hemorrhoids and help prevent them from worsening. If possible, using a standing desk for part of the work day can also be helpful.

Since truck drivers cannot usually stop and stretch their legs every hour or two, taking time to shift and redistribute their weight while driving and moving their legs and feet as much as possible can be helpful. It is also wise to use a special seat cushion designed to take away some of the pressure and reduce the discomfort.

Use soothing baths to shrink swelling

Taking frequent warm sitz or tub baths can be helpful in relieving some of the discomfort of hemorrhoids. Adding a cup of Epsom salts, readily available at grocery and drug stores, can help increase the soothing effect of bathing, but remember to avoid harsh body washes, soaps, and shampoos that can further irritate sensitive tissues.

Hemorrhoids are rarely a serious health issue, but they can require a surgical procedure called a hemorrhoidectomy. Your doctor or medical care provider can help you learn more about the hemorrhoidectomy surgical procedure and determine if it is a good solution for your condition.
